A survey is an all-day event, taking on average six hours. All aspects of the vessel are inspected (please see list of items checked). Ideally, the vessel should be inspected both ashore and afloat, so that keel joints and engine can be tested for leaks. However, this is not always possible, so I am able to re-visit when the vessel is in the water. The vessel can be inspected between tides, but this can affect moisture meter readings. I encourage the buyer to be present during the survey to discuss the findings there and then.
The survey report is between twelve and eighteen pages of A4. It complies with the standards set by the IIMS and is accepted by insurance companies and financial institutions.
A ticklist of jobs to be done in order of priority will always be given at the end of report. I am able to re-visit vessel at a later date and adjust report accordingly. Initial verbal reports can be made over the telephone, if buyer cannot be present during survey.
A pre-sale inspection is offered to sellers of vessels at a discount rate of £8 per foot LOA. This is a full condition and valuation report that is done when the vessel is first put up for sale. I have found this type of survey to be popular with sellers of older vessels, as it gives the owner time to sort out problems before the vessel is seen by potential buyers, which helps to prevent situations when a buyer likes a boat and looks forward to buying it, only to find out from a pre-purchase survey that there is a number of faults with it. In case of a pre-sale survey, the report will be revised to take into account any improvements/repairs done to the vessel, until the vessel has a clean bill of health. The report can then be transferred to the buyer’s name for a small admin fee and used for insurance cover purposes.
